Government BL College students on Tuesday blocked the Khulna-Jessore Highway for an hour after one of their fellows died and another was injured in a road accident in the Khulna city.
The deceased was identified as Md Abu Shahin, 20, son of Abu Sufian of village Uttar Bdhkashi under Koyra in Khulna and also a third year student of political science at the college.
Shahin’s friend Shahidul Islam, injured in the incident, was admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital.
Eyewitnesses and Daulatpur thana police said a Phultala-bound Nagar Paribahan bus hit the bicycle carrying Shahin and Shahidul from back on Khulna-Jessore Highway at Mohsin More in the city at around 11:00pm and sped away, leaving Shahin spot dead and Shahidul seriously injured.
They said locals and on-duty policemen rescued injured Shahidul and took him to KMCH.
As the news reached the college, the students blocked the highway at their college gate point at around 11:45pm, said eyewitnesses, adding that the agitated students damaged seven vehicles, including two buses, two trucks and two auto-rickshaws.
The students during their demonstration demanded seizure of the killer bus and exemplary punishment of its driver.
Several hundred vehicles remained stranded at both the ends of the blockade, eyewitnesses said.
The police said the students withdrew the blockade at around 12:45pm after the local administration, police and the college authorities informed them that the bus was seized and the driver was arrested and they would ensure punishment for the driver.
The Daulatpur police officer-in-charge, Anwarul Haque Bhuian, told New Age that the killer bus was seized and its driver was arrested by the Khanjahan Ali thana police at Phulbarigate and a case was lodged in this connection.
