Secondary schools, colleges and madrasas across the country will enjoy holidays during the Ramadan, announced the education ministry yesterday after a meeting at the Bangladesh Secretariat.
Secondary schools will remain closed from August 4 to September 7 while the colleges and technical institutions from August 16 to September 7 and madrasas from August 2 to September 10.
Chaired by Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, the meeting fixed the holidays for Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr and directed the English medium educational institutions to carry out the leave decision accordingly.
In case of universities, the meeting left the matter upon the universities as per their academic calendars.
Meanwhile, the primary and mass education ministry also decided to keep the government and non-government primary schools shut from August 17 to September 11, said a source of the ministry.
Earlier, the home ministry requested the education ministry to declare vacation at the educational institutions from 10th of Ramadan to reduce the gridlock in the capital and other major cities.
Education Minister Nahid said the leave-schedules have been announced as per the academic calendar set on December 31 last year.
Last year, the government in a short notice on August 12, the first day of Ramadan, shut all schools and colleges for over a month.
NATIONAL MOON SIGHTING COMMITTEE MEETS TODAY
The National Moon Sighting Committee will meet at Islamic Foundation at Baitul Mukarram at 7:30pm today to ascertain the commencement of the month of Ramadan.
State Minister for Religious Affairs and president of the committee Mohammad Shahjahan Mia will chair the meeting.
The meeting is aimed at reviewing the sighting of the moon of Ramadan in 1432 Hijri and taking decision in this connection, said a release.
