Several hundred Government Titumir College students rampaged through the college campus at Mohakhali and surroundings in Dhaka Saturday morning after the rumoured death of a female student in a road accident.
The students vandalised more than 100 vehicles stranded on the road at Mohakhali and in the surroundings, suspending traffic on the Airport Road for about two hours.
Shamima Islam Shammi, a first-year student, sustained minor injuries in a road accident near the college at about 9:30am as a car knocked her down when she was crossing the road.
Local people took her to nearby Mohakhali Metropolitan Hospital and she was discharged after first aid.
Soon after, some students came to know that Shammi died from her wounds in Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
As the news reached the campus, several hundred students with iron rods and bamboo and hockey sticks took to the streets, demanding establishment of a speed breaker in front of the college.
They barricaded the Airport Road and vandalised more than 100 vehicles stranded in the area in the presence of law enforcers.
High police officials reached the scene at around 11:15am and managed to control the situation after a meeting with the students and college authorities. Traffic resumed at around 11:30am.
