Ruling Awami League leader and minister without portfolio Suranjit Sengupta on Tuesday urged the government to complete the trial of Sohel Rana, owner of collapsed Rana Plaza, under the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act instead of taking him on remand. “The government stance has been clear with the prompt arrest of Rana. Now it should complete his trial within 120 days to ensure exemplary punishment for him to satisfy the nation,” Suranjit said this while addressing a discussion, organised by Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote at the Public Library in the city.
Criticising BNP leader Moudud Ahmed harshly for his recent remarks on Savar tragedy, he asked, “Now you are making audacious remarks on Savar incident but had your BNP government ensured any trial in such building collapse cases in the past?”
“Please don’t do politics over the building collapse incident as such politics is not good for the country,” he said.
He also called upon the opposition to come forward providing service to the humanity shunning the politics without humanity.
Referring to the verdict on Jail killing case, Sengupta said, the nation is satisfied with the verdict. The rule of law has been established through the verdict and the nation has been freed form stigma.
He also said those who have been hatching conspiracy against women empowerment, have got a befitting reply through electing Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury as the first women speaker of Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad.
“It’s a bold step in empowering women,” he added.
The organization Joint convener Ferdouse Khan Alamgir chaired the meeting, also addressed, among others, by its vice-president ATM Shamsuzzaman, general secretary Arun Sarker Rana, joint convener Reena Akhter Priya, assistant attorney general Yadia Jaman, director of Agrani Bank Advocate Balaram Poddar and vice- presidents of Krishak League Sheikh Jahangir Alam and MA Karim.
