Bangladesh pace bowler Abul Hasan will need back surgery as he has not responded to more conservative treatment, the Bangladesh Cricket Board physician said on Sunday.
The bowler sustained the injury in March during the second test against Sri Lanka in Colombo and had been rehabbing since, before finally using high-dose injections for the last month without any results.
‘Abul [Hasan] will require back surgery as he did not respond to the conservative treatment,’ said Debashish Chowdhury, the BCB physician.
‘He went through rehab before we tried injections, but everything failed. We have already asked for quotations [for the surgery] from different countries,’ said Debashish.
The surgery will cost Tk 35 lakh if it is performed in Australia. The BCB has also asked for quotations from New Zealand, India and Thailand.
This is the latest setback for Hasan, who shot to prominence by scoring a century at number 10 in his test debut against the West Indies in 2012. Later in that series he suffered a side strain during his side’s 160-run win in the second ODI in Khulna, finally making his comeback in the Sri Lanka series.
Debashish added that Mashrafee bin Murtaza could be considered for the last three ODIs in the Bangladesh ‘A’ team’s forthcoming tour of England.
The selectors wanted to give him some much needed match practice ahead of the home series against New Zealand and his improvement had encouraged administrators to procure his visa on Monday.
‘I think he can be considered for the last three ODIs for the Bangladesh ‘A’ team provided he carry on the improvement,’ said Debashish.
‘It will be entirely his decision, but as of now he does not any pain,’ he added.
Mashrafee sustained a heel injury during the final of the Bangladesh Premier League and missed the national team’s last two series against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.
