The fifth prosecution witness against the detained assistant secretary general of Jamaat, Mohammad Kamaruzzaman, on Thursday told the International Crimes Tribunal-2 that though he did not personally hear Kamaruzzaman’s order to abduct and kill his freedom-fighter
brother Golam Mostafa Talukdar, he was told of it by a survivor.
Witness Mosharraf Hossain Talukdar, while undergoing cross-examination by defence counsel Mohammad Kafil Uddin Chowdhury for the second day, also said he could not remember when the news of the abduction of his brother by Kamaruzzaman and Al-Badr members reached their village home at Khorkhoria under Sherpur.
Mosharraf on Wednesday testified that Kamaruzzaman and his Al-Badr cohorts caught his brother and killed him on 23 August, 1971 in Sherpur town.
He said Abul Kasem, who escaped from the same place at the same time in 1971, met his family members after independence and described how Mostafa was killed.
He told the tribunal that Kasem was not familiar with them before the War of Independence.
A student of class seven in 1971, Mosharraf said he himself did not go to Sherpur after getting the news of his brother’s abduction but many of his family members, including his mother, tried to go to Sherpur.
‘But my mother could not reach Sherpur as there was curfew after evening,’ he said.
He said Kamaruzzaman had no beard when he first saw him in a religious meeting at Teghoria Madrassah in Sherpur, three to four years before 1971.
Mosharraf said that only Kamaruzzaman’s name was mentioned.
The cross-examination remained incomplete when the tribunal adjourned
its proceedings till 3 September.
