Construction of the 150 foot glass tower at Swadhinata Stambha complex in Suhrawardy Uddyan is in progress, more than a decade after the project has begun. This project commemorates the historic spot where Bongobondhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman made his speech on March 7, 1971 with a clarion call for liberation. The complex consists of Shikha Chirontan, garden areas, fountains and a lake, an underground gallery and museum, an amphitheatre, the longest terracotta mural in the country, depicting our history from colonial era till liberation, and the final touch– the glass tower. Construction of the glass tower had started once before, but there were complications in design, and also allegations over budgetary corruption. On the fortieth Victory Day of Bangladesh, this incomplete project was inaugurated on December 16, 2011 with a live performance, incorporating light and sound. With the glass tower in place the project is due to be completed next month.
