Swimmer mauled to death by shark while training for charity swim

A swimmer killed in a shark attack in Australia has been named locally as a British man The British diving instructor mauled to death by a great white shark in Sydney while training for a charity swim was a former RAF engineer who was due to marry his fiancée after the pandemic delayed their wedding.
Friends said 35-year-old Simon Nellist “loved the water” and was an experienced diving instructor.
He was attacked by a four-metre-long predator at Buchan Point, near Little Bay, in the east of the city on Wednesday afternoon.
Witnesses said the shark “attacked vertically” before dragging Mr Nellist’s body out to sea. Remains were found in the water around an hour later.
A witness, fisherman Kris Linto, told Nine News he saw the moment a 4.5-metre shark attacked the swimmer.
Shark attacks in Sydney are uncommon as the city’s waters are protected by shark nets and the beaches are patrolled by drones.
Mr Nellist is the first person have died from a shark attack in 59 years.
Della Ross, a friend, told 7 News: “Everything that is connected to Simon is connected to the ocean. The news hit us like a truck because he was one of the people who make this earth lighter. He loved the water, he loved diving.”
In 2020, Australia reported 22 shark attacks. Globally, the number of shark attacks have increased to about 70 to 80 a year.
