Media people in Sylhet on Tuesday gave a 24-hour ultimatum to the administration for the arrest of the culprits, who hacked a reporter with sharp weapons in the city Saturday night.
They blamed the failure of law-enforcing agencies to bring to book the attackers and killers of journalists across the country and said a tougher movement would be launched if the attackers on Ohi Alam Reza, senior staff reporter of the regional daily Sabuj Sylhet, were not arrested within the next 24 hours.
They made the demand while addressing a rally during a human chain formed in font of the Central Shaheed Minar at Chowhatta in the city in the afternoon.
Reporters of national and regional dailies and television channels participated in the human chain under the banner of Sylhet District Press Club.
The press club president, Aziz Ahmed Selim, chaired the rally, which was addressed, among others, by Sangram Singha of daily Jugantor, Al Azad of Masranga TV, Mukith Rahmani of daily Samakal, Oyes Khasru of Ekushey TV, Zaman Monir of New Age, Shah Didar Alam Noble of Bangladesh Pratidin, Mayeen Uddin of Sakaler Khabar, Sattar Azad of daily Kaler Kantha, Nasir Ahmed of daily Sangbad, Khalilur Rahman of Dainik Khabar, Debashish Debu of daily Banik Barta.
Reza, also a lecturer of Shahjalal City College, was hacked by miscreants with sharp weapons at Sobhanighat in the city Saturday night.
