The 152nd birth anniversary of Bishwakobi Rabindranath Tagore was observed in the country on Wednesday with a call for resisting militancy, religious fanaticism and rooting out superstition from the society. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the 152nd birth anniversary of Tagore and 100 years’ celebration of his receiving the Nobel for ‘Gitanajoli’ at Shawkat Osman Memorial Auditorium on the day.
Bangla Academy organised lecture, distributed prizes and held a function at its Syed Waliullah conference room on the occasion.
Director General of Bangla Academy Professor Shamsuzzaman Khan delivered a welcome speech, while author Hasan Azizul Haque lectured on ‘Rabindranath in 21st century’ with Professor Zillur Rahman Siddiquee in the chair.
The UPL published a new book titled ‘contemporarising Tagore and the world’ edited by Imtiaz Ahmed on the occasion.
Shilpakala academy also observed the day at Shilaidaha in Kushtia, Shajadpur in Sirajganj, Patishar in Naogaon and Dakkindihi in Khulna while Bangladesh missions abroad also observed Tagore’s birth anniversary by holding colorful programmes.
Chhayanat has taken two-day long programme to observe Tagore’s birth anniversary.
The programme will start on Thursday evening at Dhanmondi’s Chhayanat cultural building through dance performances, based on Tagore’s songs.
Inaugural speeches will be given by Sanjida Khatun.
