The 71st death anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore will be observed today, the 22nd day of the Bengali month of Sraban. To mark the day, different social and cultural organisations have taken up special programmes.
The versatile personality throughout his life enriched Bangla literature through his writings.
Rabindranath was born on May 7, 1961 in the Jorasanko mansion in Kolkata. His ancestral home was in Pithabhog village under Rupsha upazila of Khulna, then part of British India, now Bangladesh.
A rare man of multifarious merits, Rabindranath was a novelist, dramatist, artiste, essayist, music composer, philosopher, academic, linguist and social reformer.
He was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1913 for the English version of his book Gitanjali.
Rabindranath penned anthems of both Bangladesh and India.
He died at his house in Kolkata on August 7, 1941.
