Almost five years have elapsed since eminent Tagore singer Tapan Mahmud released his last album. To make up for the long gap, Mahmud has recently released a double disc album under one cover titled Smritishudha.
The first one- Keno tumi bodle gechho -is a collection of 12 famous songs from the 50s to 70s era. Popular songs like Janina kokhon tumi, Megh kalo Andhar kalo, Moner janala dhore, Keno tumi badle gechho, O nadire ekti kothai have been included in the album. In 1997, Mahmud had released a similar album with songs of yesteryears, titled Gaane Bhuban Bhoriye Debo.
The other one titled Madhuri korechho daan comprises of Tagore songs, Mahmud’s signature area. This segment contains 12 songs from the Prem and Puja section of Geetabitan. Songs such as Amar hiyar majhe lukiye achho, Amar mon manena din o rajoni, Tumi kon bhangoner pathe ele, Naho mata naho konya, and Bhora thak smriti sudhay in Mahmud’s voice will enthrall the listeners. His last album of Tagore songs titled Ami tomar songe bedhechhi amar pran was released in 2008.
Dowlutur Rahman has provided music direction for the double disc, single cover album launched in this February by Commitment Production. Tapan Mahmud told New Age, ‘I have worked on the albums for the last few years, and hope that music-lovers of the country will accept my work.’
Golam Haidar of Commitment Production told New Age about the audience response, ‘The market for audio albums in our country is waning, perhaps due to the present political commotion. But we are getting considerable response for this album from the music lovers.’
