BNP spokesman Shamsuzzaman Dudu said on Wednesday that the party’s senior vice-chairman, Tarique Rahman, is eager to return home and he will do so when his physicians allow him.
Addressing an unscheduled press briefing at the BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, Dudu pointed out that Tarique holds a responsible post in the party. Tarique, arrested on March 7, 2007, during the army-backed interim regime, was freed on bail on September 3, 2008, and left for London for treatment eight days later Asked whether the BNP chairperson would retire after Tarique’s return, Dudu said it is not true.
On Tuesday Dudu had told newsmen that after his return Tarique would take over the responsibility of the party.
Dudu said Tarique is undergoing treatment in London for his illness and he would return as soon as possible if the physicians allow him.
Dudu claimed that Tarique’s speech in London on May 20 had jolted the base of the present regime and that is why the government high-ups have started a fresh propaganda against him.
Dudu alleged that the Awami League has indulged in a negative campaign against Tarique for the last 10 years, but has gained nothing, as no specific allegation against him could be proved.
The BNP leader urged the government to ensure a congenial atmosphere for Tarique’s smooth homecoming and said: “When he sets foot in Dhaka, Sheikh Hasina and her regime will know how popular he is.”
Dudu also alleged that the BNP was facing obstructions from the government in observing programmes to mark the death anniversary of the party’s founder, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. Urging the government to withdraw restrictions on rallies and human chains, Dudu said this might invite disaster for the government.
About the bail of Hefajat general secretary Babunagri, Dudu said he should have been granted bail much earlier. He was tortured, he added.
