A 14-year-old boy was killed and around 50 people, including a magistrate and three cops, were injured, in violence that marked the first half of the second day of the 36-hour nationwide hartal enforced by the BNP-led 18-party alliance. There were also reports of explosion of homemade bombs and police firing. Police said the teenager, Ali Limon, was shot dead, and a magistrate, along with four others, were injured, during clashes between Islami Chhatra Shibir activists and law enforcers, in Chapai Nawabganj.
“Limon was shot in his throat. People took away his body forcibly,” said SP (Chapai Nawabganj) Bashir Ahmed.
The boy was first taken to a local clinic and later to Chapai Nawabganj Sadar Hospital, where he was declared dead.
Shibir city unit chief Shafique Enayetullah said Limon was their activist. At least 17 were injured in the violence, he claimed.
Police said the teenager was a student of Class VII at Hamidullah High School, and he hailed from the town’s Upar-Rajarampur Mahalla.
District executive magistrate Murad Hassan Beg said, “Shibir supporters took position on Chapai Nawabganj-Rajshahi road around 11 am. Police tried to disperse them, but the protesters threw bricks at them. They exploded some crude bombs. I and two policemen were injured. Police fired rubber bullets, shotgun rounds and lobbed teargas shells in defence.”
Earlier around 7.15 am, Shibir activists had engaged in a cat-and-mouse chase with law enforcers and threw bombs.
