On January 2, criminals stopped a rice-laden truck by putting barricade with another truck in Uttara. They then killed the driver and the helper, dumped their bodies in a roadside ditch at Banani and sped away with the truck.
A week later, police recovered their decomposed bodies. They also arrested two of the gang who confessed to the crimes at a press briefing at DB office.
On January 12, auto-rickshaw driver Faysal Molla Chanchal was found dead in a drain in front of Pallima Sangsad of Khilgaon in the city.
It is believed that carjackers killed him to capture his auto-rickshaw.
On February 3, a gang shot a bike rider at capital’s Golapbagh and sped away with his bike.
The next day, criminals in guise of passengers hijacked a microbus that they hired from airport. They pushed down the driver on Dhaka Maowa Highway and sped away.
Another gang stabbed a biker in front of Buet and went away with the bike on February 10.
Just seven days later, CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver Mokter was found dead in Aminbazar with his vehicle missing.
Also in the same week, a private car was hijacked in an innovative way from the city’s Agargaon area around midnight.
In this case, criminals in a car hit this car damaging its looking glass. When the driver got down from the car to determine the damage, the criminals also got down from their car and pointed guns at the driver. They forced him into the car, tied his body with rope and dropped him by the road unconscious, and went away with the car.
At least two failed attempts of carjacking were reported last month.
On April 15, five criminals on bikes stopped computer businessman Pijush Chakrabarti, also on a bike, at Kakrail at gunpoint and asked for the key. Refused, they attempted to snatch the key. They eventually fled as some passers by approached in that direction.
Another incident took place in the same area four days later. This time, criminals posing as law enforcers stopped a private car and attempted to speed away with it.
When the car owner cried for help, a police team patrolling nearby came to the rescue and succeeded in arresting one of the gang members.
