Three-day laptop fair opens in city

New law soon to check misuse of ICT
State minister for law, justice and parliamentary affairs Kamrul Islam on Wednesday said the government would soon introduce a new law to check misuse of information communication technology in the country.
‘Internet abusers in most cases cannot be punished in the absence of appropriate law for the ICT sector,’ he said, inaugurating a three-day laptop fair at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre.
Admitting the government’s failure to intensify the progress in ‘Digital Bangladesh’ programme, Kamrul said the government was taking up new programmes like providing updates of cases through internet at affordable cost.
Pavilion and stalls of more than 40 companies including name brands HP, Compaq, Samsung, Dell, Fujitsu, Gateway, Gigabyte, Asus, Lenovo, Toshiba, Acer, and Apple are participating in the fair, seventh of its kind.
Speaking on the occasion, Bangladesh Computer Samity’s president Mostafa Jabbar said the government would not be able to implement its ‘Digital Bangladesh’ programme even by 2050 if it proceeds at the present pace.
Mentioning that of the 32 thousand education institutes only 14 thousand have been provided with computers by the government so far, he said the government has failed to establish an ICT-based infrastructure.
Mastafa Jabbar stressed the need for providing computers at a reasonable price to make them affordable to the poor.
Bangladeshi Everest conquer Musa Ibrahim expressed his hope that the fair would be able to attract a large number of young people.
The first day of the fair attracted a huge number of people from all ages, particularly students interested to own a laptop of their own.
Toshiba’s marketing executive Abdus Sabur Chowdhury said they usually aimed at meeting corporate demands but were also targeting the young buyers in the fair.
Every company is offering discounts and gifts ranging from Tk 2,000 to Tk 10,000 at the fair which will remain open from 10:00am to 8:00pm and the entry fee will be Tk 20.
Fifty per cent of the proceeds from gate money will go for education of underprivileged children, the organisers said.
