A tiger that intruded into the locality from the Sundarbans on Saturday night injured four people at village Harinagar under Shyamnagar Upazila in Satkhira district.
The forest department officials, with the help of the local people, released the tiger in the forest after tranquilizing the animal in the early hours of Sunday.
The injured persons who were admitted to different hospitals were identified as forest guard Sumon, 30, boatman Selim, 40, local tiger team member Hafizur Rahman, 35 and villager Fazlu Mia, 35.
Local people and Sundarbans forest department officials said the tiger, aged around 12 to 13, had crossed Malancha river and entered village Harinagar. A motor cyclist saw the tiger crossing the Harinagar embankment at around 8:30pm on Saturday.
The motorcyclist, seeing the tiger, cried out and later the villagers were warned about the presence of the tiger in the locality through loudspeaker of the local mosque, they said, adding that the local people soon informed the nearby forest station.
When the forest officials came to the spot and tried to catch the tiger, the tiger attacked the people while Sumon, Selim, Hafizur and Fazlu became injured in tiger’s attack. They were immediately sent to hospital for treatment.
The forest officials were able to tranquilise the tiger at around 2:00am on Sunday and later released it at Dobeki area under Sundarbans west division early on Sunday, said forest officials.
Assistant conservator of forest of Sundarbans west division Taufiqul Islam, talking to New Age, said they could rescue and send the tiger back to the Sundarbans in healthy condition.
He claimed that the tiger became old and entered into the locality mistakenly either in search of food or being defeated in competition with other tigers in the forest.
