Mashrafee bin Murtaza will make his debut as Bangladesh captain when he will lead the side against West Indies A team in a three-day match starting from today at the Kensington Oval in Barbados.
Bangladesh, who will play two Tests and three one-day international matches during their Caribbean tour, reached West Indies on Tuesday and had a vigorous practice session on following day. It was the only information available about the team from the Bangladesh Cricket Board, which has sent the team without a manager for the first time in many years. Manager Shafiqul Haque Heera could not be reached on his cell phone.
West Indies have named a largely untested 12-man A side to face Bangladesh in the game that included only three players having international experience – captain Sewnarine Chattergoon, Kemar Roach and Lendl Simmons.
Simmons, the nephew of former West Indian all-rounder and currently Ireland coach Phil Simmons, was not included for the ODIs against India despite a good showing in the ICC World Twenty20.
Fast bowler Nelon Pascal was with the West Indies squad on the tour to England but only played in warm-up matches. Young Andre Creary of Jamaica has yet to play a first-class match but has found a place in the squad to face Bangladesh.
The selection of the rest of the squad is down to solid first-class performances this season. Adrian Barath was the fourth highest run-scorer with 845 at 44.47, Combined Campuses & Colleges’ Omar Phillips scored 601 at 33.38 including a double-century and Kieran Powell made 567 at 37.80 for Leeward Islands.
The CCC off-spinner Ryan Austin topped the wickets tally with 60 at 24.06 and leg-spinner Gavin Wallace had 31 at 16.96 for the winners Jamaica. Devon Thomas, the wicketkeeper, had 30 dismissals to go with his 376 runs.
