Bangladesh national team spinners will not have the opportunity to avail the services of their spin bowling coach Saqlain Mushtaq on the forthcoming tour of Zimbabwe as he decided to remain beside his ailing wife, said the officials of the Bangladesh Cricket Board on Friday.
The former Pakistani off-spinner joined the Bangladesh national cricket team as their spin bowling coach on August 14 on a four-month contract with the BCB and was expected to return to Dhaka ahead of the Zimbabwe tour.
‘Saqlain’s wife is sick so he opted to stay back, though we tried our level best to get his services on the tour,’ Enayet Hossain Seraj, chairman of the BCB’s cricket operation committee, told reporters on Friday.
Saqlain, famous for his pioneering ‘doosra’ delivery with 208 Test wickets and 288 one-day international
wickets to his name, made an instant impact on the Bangladesh national team guiding off-spinner Sohag Gazi to reach a new height.
Gazi, now one of the most reliable spinners in the Tigers camp, often acknowledges the contribution of Saqlain as he raised his confidence level during his debut Test match against the West Indies and helped him adjust to international cricket in a short span of time.
Saqlain had offered the BCB to provide his services for 100 days at a stretch.
