TV producer, couple drown in pond at a Gazipur resort
An executive producer of a private television channel and a couple drowned yesterday while on vacation at a resort in Rajendrapur, Gazipur.
The deceased were identified as Tanveer Jahid Nayan, 32, of Ekattor Television, Jamil Akhter Lipu, 33, managing director of Srot Interior and Consulting Firm, and his wife Asma Akter Ira, 25, a final-year student of BBA at AIUB.
Sources from Ekattor Television said Nayan and Lipu along with their spouses went on holiday at Shiruni Cottage, a recreational centre, Thursday night.
According to Sub-Inspector (SI) Sayeed Azharul Islam of Hotapara Police Outpost, Lipu and Ira were strolling along a pond near their cottage around 6:30am when Ira slipped on soggy grass and fell into the water. Lipu immediately plunged into the pond to save her. None of them knew how to swim.
At this pity sight, the SI continued, Nayan, who knew how to swim, dived into the pond in rescue, but he also drowned along with the couple. Nayan’s wife Subarna Sejuty Tushi was near the scene. Hearing her scream for help, locals rushed in and pulled the three out of the water in an unconscious state and took them to hospitals.
Lipu and Ira were declared dead at Uttara Jahanara Clinic while Nayan at Gulshan United Hospital, the SI said.
Both the couples got married a few months ago. Nayan’s colleague Shakil Ahmed said Tushi and Ira were friends.
Before joining Ekattor Television, Nayan worked as a producer in private television channels ATN Bangla, CSB and Ekushey Television and as programme coordinator in BBC Trust.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith, prime minister’s adviser HT Imam and colleagues and friends of Nayan visited his Gulshan home and conveyed condolences to the bereaved family. His namaz-e-janaza was held there after Juma prayers.
Nayan was buried at Buddhijibi Graveyard in Mirpur, Dhaka.
