A commercial truck carrying around 70,000 pounds (31,751 kilograms) of honeybee hives flipped over in the western United States, releasing millions of bees, authorities reported on Friday.
The incident took place in northwestern Washington state, near the Canadian border close to Lynden, according to social media updates from the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office.
It is estimated that about 250 million bees have escaped from the truck.
“250 million bees are now loose,” the Whatcom County Sheriff posted on social media. “AVOID THE AREA due to the risk of bees escaping and swarming.”
The aim is to rescue as many bees as possible, with roads in the area closed while bee experts assist with the clean-up.
“Thank you to the amazing community of beekeepers: over two dozen came to help ensure the rescue of millions of pollinating honey bees would be as effective as possible,” the sheriff’s office stated.
The plan is to let the bees return to their hives and locate their queen bee within the next day or two, it mentioned.
The objective is to save as many bees as possible.
