Padma and Meghna will be two new divisions created by the government, each containing districts from the existing Faridpur and Cumilla areas.
A Cabinet Division official has stated that the topic will be discussed at this Sunday’s meeting of the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reforms (Nicar).
The meeting will be held at the Secretariat, with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
“The issue will be discussed at the meeting. If the committee gives the nod, the two new divisions will be formed,” the official said.
As suggested, the Padma division will consist of five districts (Faridpur, Rajbari, Madaripur, Shariatpur, and Gopalganj), while the Meghna division will include six (Cumilla, Noakhali, Feni, Laxmipur, Brahmanbaria, and Chandpur).
There are currently eight divisions in Bangladesh (Dhaka, Chattogram, Rajshahi, Khulna, Mymensingh, Barishal, Rangpur, and Sylhet).
Hasina announced on October 21 of last year that she planned to upgrade Faridpur and Cumilla to new divisions, to be named after the Padma and the Meghna, the country’s two most important rivers.
Speaking at a programme marking the opening of the newly constructed office of the Cumilla city Awami League, the PM said, “I have decided to form two new divisions and name those after two rivers — the Padma and the Meghna.”
According to sources, the meeting on Sunday will also address the following agendas: formation of a municipality in Satkhira’s Shyamnagar upazila, re-demarcation of Jamalpur’s Madarganj upazila, extension of areas of Nandail municipality in Mymensingh, renaming of Kushtia Islamic University Police Station Jhaudia Police Station and its relocation to Jhaudia area.
