Local people and Rajshahi University students blocked the Rajshahi–Natore Highway after two schoolboys were killed and five injured in two road accidents in Rajshahi on Tuesday.
The deceased were Shanto Islam, 7, and Rafi Ahmed, 9, both from Paba. They were students of the Nice Academy.
The police quoting witnesses said a truck headed for Rajshahi had run over about 2:00pm a motorcycle carrying Shanto and Rafi. The two died on the spot and the motorcyclist was injured.
The local people captured the truck driver Ramprasad, 50, and beat him up. They had then blocked the highway at Naohata for an hour.
The police later cleared the highway and rescued the truck driver, who was sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. Physicians said he had been severely wounded.
The bodies were sent to the RMCH morgue for post-mortem examinations. A case was filed, the Paba police officer-in-charge, Ramjan Ali, said.
In the other accident, four were injured on the Rajshahi University campus when a motorcycle had collided with a car.
The injured are Mohammed Nayem, a second-year physics student, who was driving the car, Shimul, who was driving the motorcycle, his companion Akash and another unnamed man.
The motorcycle was carrying the three when it hit the car on Paris Road on the campus about 12 noon.
The injured were sent to the university medical centre for treatment.
The university students later blocked Rajshahi-Natore Highway for an hour demanding restrictions the plying of vehicles by outsiders on the campus.
The proctor, Chowdhury Mohammod Zakaria, and the police went visited the spot and persuaded the students to call off their blockade giving them assurance that outsiders’ movement on the campus would be controlled.
