Two men were shot dead allegedly by the police on Dhaka-Sirajganj-Rajshahi highway in Sirajganj early Tuesday. The victims were Al Mamun, 25, son of Sujabot Ali, and Monsur Ahmed, 23, son of Aher Ali, of village Baniagati, and they were cousins.
The police said the victims were shot dead by the police while they were preparing commit robbery on the highway.
However, the victims’ family said Monsur was an engine-van driver and Mamun was his assistant and they were not involved in robbery.
The Bangabandhu Bridge west police officer-in-charge, Abdul Hamid, said the police had information that 8 to 10 robbers were preparing to commit robbery in the area.
The police reached the area at about 1:30am and opened fire on the suspected robbers but none was found injured or dead immediately, the OC said.
Mamun’s body was found in the area early Tuesday and Monsur’s body was found in the morning in a sugarcane field near his house, he added.
The OC said the bodies were sent to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations.
However, the victims’ family said that they were shot dead while they were returning home placing their vehicles in the garage.
