The University Grants Commission (UGC) yesterday expressed deep concern over the current instabilities at different public universities including Buet, Jahangirnagar University (JU), Pabna University of Science and Technology (PUST) and Rajshahi University (RU).
At a full commission meeting, the UGC formed a three-member committee to look into the current situation at the universities, said a UGC press release.
Headed by UGC member Prof Dr Mohammad Mohabbat Khan, the committee will visit the universities to keep the ongoing situation under surveillance and assist the university administration.
The deadlock in academic activities at Buet, JU, PUST and RU is hampering overall higher education in the country, the commission observed.
It urged teachers, students, administrative staff, local governments and political leaders to act responsibly to resolve the crisis.
The commission will try its level best to help the universities, said the release, adding that such impasse is not at all desirable when the number of students at university level is more than 22 lakh.
JU authorities yesterday declared the university closed till August 25, following violence on campus triggered off by police firing on the students on Wednesday night.
Buet, the country’s leading engineering university, plunged into crisis after teachers and students held a demonstration on July 11, demanding removal of its vice-chancellor and his deputy.
PUST has been declared closed by university authorities for 31 days from August 5 after on-campus violence that left 10 people injured on August 1.
Instability is prevailing at RU after a Chhatra League activist had died there on July 17 in a gunfight between rival factions reportedly over fund collection for the Padma bridge project.
