The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Tuesday evening claimed that the United Nations assistant secretary general for political affairs, Oscar Fernandez Taranco, welcomed BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s proposal for election-time government. ‘He [Taranco] made the phone call to acting BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in the evening and welcomed the BNP chairperson’s proposal,’
Khaleda’s press secretary Maruf Kamal Khan told reporters.
Taranco during the phone conversation reiterated the UN stand for holding dialogue for a free, fair, credible and inclusive election, Maruf said.
The UN assistant secretary general told Fakhrul that Taranco would also made phone call to Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam, he added.
The UN assistant secretary general had visited Dhaka few months ago and met both the prime minister Sheikh Hasina and leader of the opposition Khaleda Zia to persuade them for holding dialogue between the ruling and opposition parties to settle the issue of election-time government.
