Cricket enthusiasts and Bangladesh Cricket Board officials had an unusual outing at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Friday as they witnessed a six-a-side cricket match involving physically-challenged cricketers. US Embassy in Dhaka organised the match to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act of the United States.US ambassador to Bangladesh Marcia Bernicat and national cricketer Mahmudullah were among others who attended the match, won by Gazipur Warriors by 15 runs against Dhaka Avengers.
‘I am pleased and humbled to be with you,’ said Bernicat while addressing the physically challenged cricketers.
‘This is an absolutely great example of good things that happen in our community and the game of cricket brought us together for a good cause,’ she said.
‘It shows how young people can use sports for tools of empowerment. This cricket match ends with hope to reduce the stigma and discrimination associated with disabilities.’
‘Performing in all kinds of sports, including cricket, is known as an avenue that has transformed attitude of the players and attitude of the communities that we live in.’
‘Living in Bangladesh I know it is an integral part of our society,’ she said.
Bangladesh all-rounder Mahmudullah was equally inspired.
’The way they tried despite their physical obstacles only shows that you can overcome every challenge you face if you have determination,’ said Mahmudullah.
