The Election Commission (EC) will announce the schedule for elections in 113 upazila parishads under 48 districts on Sunday, sources told The Independent. The EC will conduct the polls in two phases. The decisions were taken by the commission yesterday evening at a meeting presided over by the Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed. Members of the commission and senior officials were present. According to the EC, the tenure of the 221 upazilas in 59 districts will expire by March 2014. And the tenure of rest of the upazilas will end over a period from April to June, 2014. The total number of Upazila is 487.
The commission sources said that the EC would hold an emergency meeting of the secretary of local government and concerned officials tomorrow afternoon to discuss preparation of the elections.
The EC held the 3rd Upazila Election on January 22, 2009.
According to the EC, it needs around 45 days for preparation and 43 days for conducting the polls.
“The EC move came following a visit to the commission by Prime Minister’s political adviser HT Imam,” a senior official said.
