United States media is interested to know if any American company sourced product from any of the garment factories housed in the ill-fated Rana Plaza that was collapsed on Wednesday morning killing scores of people. During daily press briefings on Thursday and Friday at the US State Department, journalists asked acting deputy spokesperson Patrick Ventrell about the involvement of any American companies with the garment factories situated in Rana Plaza. “I did check again this morning, and we still don’t have information one way or another on any American companies. I know that it’s a fairly chaotic scene as they go through and continue to work through this very grim scene,” he told the enquiring journalists on Friday.
To another question, Ventrell said, “My understanding is that there were a number of floors in this facility that had a number of different companies. And so in terms of making our due diligence in terms of looking at the subcontractors and other associations, we don’t have any information.”
Describing the incident as a terrible tragedy, he said, “Our hearts go out to the victims of the building collapse and we stand ready to assist”.
