Russia, Myanmar, Nepal, Belarus greet Hasina
The United States will continue working with the new government of Bangladesh although it is disappointed over the January 5 polls, the State Department said on Monday.
Marie Harf, deputy spokesperson of the State Department, divulged the information at a regular press briefing when asked if Washington recognised the new government in Bangladesh as it did not recognise the election as free and fair. “We obviously work with governments who are elected, but in regards to these elections themselves, we have already made clear our disappointment with the elections, which in our view did not credibly reflect the will of the Bangladeshi people since almost all of the seats of the new parliament weren’t contested or had only token opposition,” she said.
“So we’ll make clear our concerns when we have them,” she added.
Asked if the US would continue working with the new government, the deputy spokesperson said, “We continue to work – of course we will while making clear our concerns with the election.”
Meanwhile, Russia, Myanmar, Nepal and Belarus have congratulated the new government of Sheikh Hasina on the assumption of the office.
Russian Ambassador to Dhaka Alexander A Nikolaev handed over the letter of felicitation from President Vladimir Putin to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Ganabhaban on Tuesday.
Myanmar President Thein Sein and Khil Raj Regmi, Chairman to the Council of Ministers of Nepal, congratulated the new government, said a Foreign Ministry press release.
Belarus also congratulated Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday on her assumption of office.
Earlier on Monday, India, China, Nepal, Cambodia and Vietnam congratulated Sheikh Hasina on her assumption of the office of the Prime Minister.
