Dance troupe Kathak Nritya Sampradaya organised a classical music and dance programme marking the 86th birth anniversary
of late tabla maestro of the country
Ustad Kamruzzaman Moni at Chhayanaut Auditorium on Wednesday.
Disciples of the late Ustad, a number of dance troupes and young, emerging talented classical musicians paid tribute to Moni through their recitals.
The music session began with a presentation of the late Ustad’s composition titled Brinda on table by his students from Tabla Shikhhalaya.
Young talented classical performers who have won this year’s national level contest of classical music pleased the audience with their performances. Arnab Satyam Roy presented raga puriya dhaneshree, an evening time raga, which enthralled the audience as they expressed awe at the beautiful rendition by a young boy.
Sukanta Biswas and Krishnadas Mallick individually presented the same tritaal (three beats) on tablas that were received with loud applauses from the audience.
Beside instrumental and vocal recitals, Falguni Sen of dance troupe Nrityanandan amused the audience with a performance of Manipuri Nritya called Radha Abhisar.
Members of Nrityashree presented a dance recital called Mangalacharan-Ganesh Bandana, a popular dance form in Orissa. Five members of host troupe Kathak Nritya Sampraday performed Kathak at the programme.
Earlier, Saju Ahmed, director of Kathak Nritya Samprada, delivered a welcome speech in which he recounted his memory with Ustad Moniruzzaman Moni. Seasoned artistes Zeenat Barkatullah, Laila Hasan and others also recalled their memories of Ustad Moni. Former advisor to the care-taker government Rasheda K Chowdhury was present as the chief guest.
Ustad Kamruzzaman Moni was born in 1927. He took lessons in classical music and tabla from pundits like Barin Majumder, Shawkat Ali Khan Kadri. He used to be a regular performer and teacher of tabla at Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. He established an institution for tabla- Tabla Shikhhalay in 1972. He also published a book on tabla titled Tabla Biggyan. He died in 2011. Reality show Pond’s My 2nd Honeymoon will be aired by Desh TV at 9.45pm tonight
