The prices of some essentials and vegetables remained high yesterday despite an increase in supply with a slight improvement in weather conditions in the last 24 hours.
Prices of vegetables maintained an upward trend in city markets over the last couple of days after a fall in supply for heavy downpour across the country. The weather improved yesterday but prices of vegetables remained unchanged in the capital’s kitchen markets.
However, green chilli saw a slight fall in prices. It was sold between Tk 140 and 150 a kilogram in retail market on Thursday, but it came down to Tk 90-150 a kg yesterday.
“Prices of green chilli have fallen as its supply increased last night [Thursday],” said Mizu Mia, a wholesaler in Karwan Bazar kitchen market.
But vegetables did not see any fall in prices.
“I have bought cucumber, pointed gourd and eggplant at the same prices I paid during the days of heavy downpour,” said Abdul Halim, employee of an insurance company, who went to a kitchen market in Uttara at the weekend.
Cucumber was sold for Tk 30-45 a kg, pointed gourd for Tk 30-40 a kg and eggplant for Tk 35-50 a kg in city’s kitchen markets yesterday.
But their prices varied from market to market. For example, cucumber was sold for Tk 30-35 a kg at Karwan Bazar but it was Tk 40 and above a kg at New Market.
The prices of chickpea, soybean oil, onion and sugar remained unchanged.
Chickpea, an essential item for iftar, was sold for Tk 65-70 a kg, sugar for Tk 65-70 a kg, and onion of local varieties for Tk 38-40 a kg yesterday.
Unpacked soybean oil was sold for Tk 109 a litre.
