Vettori claims hattrick at cricket awards

Daniel Vettori played out another commanding performance at the New Zealand Cricket Awards tonight, claiming a hattrick of leading accolades.
The New Zealand captain was predictably crowned player of the year while he was also awarded the Winsor Cup for first class bowling and the JR Reid best allrounder trophy.
It was little surprise Vettori dominated the annual awards ceremony given the dominant role he has played throughout the summer.
Vettori, whose powers were increased he was added to a revamped NZC selection panel last month, often fought a lone hand during August’s unsuccessful two-test series in Sri Lanka – his defiant 140 on the series’ final day in Colombo was his second test ton of the summer following a similarly forlorn 118 against India in Hamilton.
Vettori’s left arm spin – his stock trade – was also a regular and valuable source of wickets. He snared 36 wickets at 27.22 and in Colombo in the second test against Sri Lanka became just the eighth test player to achieve the 300-wicket/3000 run test double.
NZC chief executive Justin Vaughan said Vettori was a deserving winner of the supreme award after an outstanding season.
“Daniel has been an inspiration …. he has led his side from the front.
“A six-wicket haul against the West Indies, a century against India then going on to join the elite club of 300 wickets and 3000 runs – this really has been Daniel’s year,” Vaughan said.
Jesse Ryder was awarded the Redpath Cup for batting on the back his maiden test century and then double ton against India – knocks that helped produce a season average of 55.
The outstanding one-day international batting performance award was won by Martin Guptill after he scored 122 on debut against the West Indies.
The ODI bowling award was taken by Kyle Mills due in part to his match-winning four for 35 in the Chappell-Hadlee opener in Perth.
Former international Mathew Sinclair was named domestic player of the year; allrounder Sophie Devine took the women’s award.
Retired captain Haidee Tiffin took the women’s batting cup and former teammate Kate Pulford was named best bowler.
Adam Milne of Palmerston North Boy’s High School was named young cricketer of the year after the fast bowler took 13 Gilette Cup wickets at 8.15.
