Prime Bank complete Super League lineup
Victoria Sporting Club edged Gazi Group by 28 runs to finish the first phase of Dhaka Premier League on top of the table, which also ended many speculations regarding the match on Thursday.
The match held a day after the original schedule allegedly to give Gazi Group some advantage in the race for a spot in the Super League, but in the end it turned out to a thrilling contest in Fatullah.
Victoria’s win shattered the dream of Gazi and took defending champions Prime Bank to the six-team Super League.
In the rain-affected match, Victoria made 219-7 in their allocated 33 overs before Gazi were all-out for 191 in 30.1 overs .
The match started on 12:15 pm due to morning rain.
Victoria accumulated 15 points from 11 games and Gazi ended with 10 points.
Victoria’s all-rounder Al-Amin grabbed 5-27 to bundle out Gazi and he was adjudged as the man of the match.
But early in the day, their opener Abdul Mazid also ended the initial phase of the league on a high as he scored his second century in the league and became the second highest scorer with 538 runs.
Mazid, who also made a century in their previous game against Brothers Union, made 100 runs and added 122 runs in the second-wicket stand with Mominul Haque to give his side a good launching pad.
Mazid struck eight boundaries and two
sixes in his 92-ball innings while Mominul made 73 off 66 balls with 10 boundaries.
No other Victorian batsman other than Al-Amin, one of the only four players to accumulate 500-plus runs in the league, made a double-digit score as he scored 24 runs to take them past 200 runs.
Mohammad Sharif grabbed 3-19 while Delwar Hossain got 2-36 for Gazi.
In reply, Gazi lost two quick wickets to be reduced to 11-2 but Indian Puneet Bisht and Shamsur Rahman added 95 runs in the third wicket to keep on the chase.
Shamsur got out for 42 runs that took him on top of the league’s highest run getter with 558 runs though his dismissal in the 20th over derailed the chase.
None other batsman could provide support to Puneet, who was dismissed on 86 inthe bowling of Al-Amin, and that put Gazi’s Super League dream into grave.
Mahbub Alam grabbed 3-37 for Victoria other than Al-Amin’s heroic.
