The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad Saturday claimed that the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) elections were held in a free, fair and peaceful manner.
“The voting in the GCC polls was completed without any unpleasant incidents and the voters exercised their franchises in peaceful environment,” CEC said this while addressing a press conference at the EC secretariat at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital. “No untoward incident was reported from the voting centres,” he said, adding: “Steps have been taken in centres on which definite complains were lodged.”
He also called upon the GCC mayoral and councillor candidates to accept the poll results as it is.
The CEC said about 58 per cent votes were cast until 4.00 pm. Voting in 37 polling centres will continue until 6 pm, he added.
“I request the candidates and supporters to keep calm after the results are announced,” CEC said.
“Law enforcers in Gazipur are being kept on alert. They’ll do everything in their capacity to retain law and order in the region,” he added.
