After two days of driving rains, which triggered storm surges along the coasts, inundating low lying areas, the weather is likely to improve further from Saturday. The rains have started slowing down and the water is also receding from the coastal areas. The situation would improve further from Saturday, a senior meteorologist at the Dhaka met office said on Friday. All the trouble started since Wednesday when a depression, which brewed in the north west Bay of Bengal on Wednesday and crossed the south western coasts over the Sundarbans and turned into a land depression over the West Bengal before moving towards north west India dumped heavy rains. As the depression having a wing span spreading over 44 km was packed with winds reaching up to 40-50 kms in gusts caused troubles not only in the sea, but also whipped up surges rising 2-3 feet over astronomical tides along the coast, while it was crossing the coast in the midnight of Wednesday.
The driving rains also caused havoc across the country, bringing a taste of early Monsoon with a dank and windy day on Friday after driving rains over night.
The winds caused suspension of ferries both at Paturia and Mawa and Kawrakandi and also suspension of sea truck and ferry services to Hatiya from the mainland.
At least 100 km of embankment in Noakhali was damaged by the surges, which also washed away a large number of cattle, reports said.
The highest amount of 49mm rains were recorded in Kutubdia,34mm in SAtkhira,31 mm in Dinajpur, 29mm in Jessore, 26mm in Syedpur, 20mm in Patuakhali,18mm in Khepupara, 12 mm in Dhaka.
