The winter this year will arrive late and be little shorter because of a number of depressions in the Bay of Bengal, said Bangladesh Meteorological Department officials on Sunday.
BMD officials said the temperature will decrease within a few days.
The Met officials said the country usually experiences the winter season from late November to February, while the arctic blow from the Himalayan mountain range move across Bangladesh to the Bay of Bengal.
SM Mahmudul Huque, BMD meteorologist said that due to Cyclone Helen and Lehar, the winter set in delayed in the country and the temperature is still little high as above 15 degree Celsius in maximum places of the country.
‘After a few days, the temperature of both the day and night will be reduced for 5-7 degrees Celsius in maximum places of the country while the cyclone Lehar will calm down within few days,’ he said.
Currently, temperature in most areas of the country is around 22-24 degrees Celsius in day time and around 16-18 at night. Yesterday, in Dhaka the temperature was 24.2 in day time and 18.8 degree Celsius at night.
He also said that from the middle of December the temperatures would be lower than 15 degree Celsius in many areas of the country’s northern and north-eastern region.
According to the Met office, few places of the country were experiencing less than 15 degree Celsius including Srimangal upazila of Moulvibazar and Dinajpur district. Yesterday, temperature of Srimangal and Dinajpur were same as 14.5 degree Celsius.
BMD website stated that a low or mid range cold-wave will be seen at the last week of December.
BMD director M Shah Alam said after mid-December up to early February the country will observe acute cold.
The Met office sources also said the country is likely to experience a deep range coldwave during tenth national election period in the first and second week of next January.
‘As far as we have forecast, the country is likely to face a mid-range cold-wave in last week of Decembers and another at the first and second week of next January,’ Mahmudul said.
