A young housewife allegedly hanged herself after she was harassed in village arbitration at Boteshwar village under Belabo upazila of the district Thursday night.
She was identified as Yasmin Sultana, 27, daughter of late Suruj Mia of the village.
Yasmin was married off to Asad Mia 14 years back, villagers said. Following family feud and financial crisis, she joined a garments factory at Gazipur on September 4 this year.
Six days later Yasmin’s mother Johora Begum took her back to the village. Johora got her daughter divorced and married her off to Abul Kalam of Rajarbag village on the same day.
Hearing the news of the marriage, locals and relatives of Asad, Yesmin’s first husband, held Yasmin and Abul Kalam.
On Thursday evening, Yasmin and Abul Kalam were produced before an arbitration meeting of the elders of the village chaired by Union Parishad Chairman Abul Kalam Azad.
In the arbitration, Abul Kalam, former UP member Suruj Mia and other elders of the village physically harassed her and hurled insults, villagers said.
After returning home, embarrassed and tormented Yasmin committed suicide by hanging herself.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to a hospital morgue for autopsy.
