Nobel peace laureate professor Muhammad Yunus was nominated as one of the torchbearers for 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, said a press release on Tuesday.
The press release, issued by the Yunus Centre, said Yunus was nominated for the job by the International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach.The Rio Olympic Torch relay began with the traditional Olympic flame lighting ceremony in the Greek city of Olympia, birthplace of the ancient Games, on April 21, 2016.
Nearly 12,000 torchbearers carried the torch for roughly 200 metres each, before passing the Olympic flame on to the next torchbearer.
The relay will conclude on 5 August when the last torchbearer will light the Olympic cauldron during the Rio 2016 Opening Ceremony at the Maracanã Stadium.
Professor Yunus will bear the Olympic torch at the final leg of the relay in Rio on August 4, 2016.
After travelling more than three hundred cities throughout the country, it will end on 5 August 2016 during the Opening Ceremony at the Maracanã Stadium.
