Nobel laureate Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus earned the top position among the 10 inspirational Bangladeshis around the world in a list released on Tuesday by British Bangladeshi Power and Inspiration, an organisation based in London. Co-founder of YouTube Jawed Karim, BRAC founder Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, JAGGO founder Korvi Rakshand, Khan Academy founder Salman Khan, lawyer Sara Hossain, cricketer Sakib Al Hassan, Medtronic CEO Omar Ishrak, founder of Sumazi.com Sumaya Kazi and Everest climber Nishat Mazumder also made it to the list that was made public on Tuesday at the Commonwealth room of the British Parliament.
The list of 100 for 2014 showcases British Bangladeshi talent across 20 different categories including, politics, business and enterprise, innovation, media, sport, culture, celebrities, restaurateurs and emerging influence.
For the first time, the general public have participated in the selection process by nominating their most inspiring figures in British Bangladeshi society. The top 100 names were announced by prominent figures such as Baroness Syeda Warsi, Danny Alexander MP, Anne Main MP, Dame Tessa Jowell MP, Lord Karan Bilimoria, Bangladesh High Commissioner to UK Mijarul Quayes, and a number of other MPs and dignitaries were in attendance.
