Zakir’s resolute ton goes in vain

Wicketkeeper batsman Zakir Hasan’s brilliant unbeaten century went in vain as his team Sylhet lost to Barisal in the final day of their fourth round National Cricket League match where three other matches ended in draws in different venues on Tuesday. Zakir remained not out on 137 but his side was all-out for 297 in the last over of the match and lost by 150 runs against Barisal at Bogra giving the victorious side 13 points and four points for the losing side.
Dhaka batsmen showed their determination as they played more than 100 overs in the last day to salvage a draw against Khulna at Fatullah. Dhaka got seven points thanks to their first innings lead while Khulna fetched six points.
At Khulna, Dhaka Metropolis declared their innings on 352-7 after Mehedi Hasan completed his century to set a target of 296 runs to Rangpur, who finished the day on 72-3. Rangpur got eight points and Dhaka fetched six points from the match.
Not even three innings were completed in Chittagong where Nazmul Hossain scored century for Rajshahi to help them finish the day on 273-6 adding to their first innings total of 208.
Hosts scored 350 in their only innings. Chittagong and Rajshahi got seven and four points respectively.
Barisal v Sylhet
Resuming on 54-2, Sylhet lost Rajin Saleh for 58 while they were chasing 448. Zakir and Alok Kapali, who scored 56, made a 104-run partnership before the rest failed to provide substantial support to Zakir.
The 17-year old batsman, Zakir, who represented Bangladesh Under-19 team, gave a lone handed fight in his 389-minute long innings where he faced 292 balls and struck 20 boundaries.
Sohag Gazi picked up 5-112, including a wicket in the second ball of the final over of the day and Monir Hossain gave him good support with 3-71 to help his side win the match and clinch the top spot of Tier-2 with 37 points.
Salam Hossain, who scored a century for Barisal shared the man-of-the-match with Sohag.
Dhaka v Khulna
Dhaka needed 433 runs in the last day with eight wickets in hand as they started the day with 37-2. Opener Abdul Mazid scored 60 off 199 balls and Saif Hasan remained not out on 64 off 191 balls while the other batsmen consumed enough balls to help see off the day.
Mehedi Hasan Miraz picked up 3-70 for Khulna.
With six points, Khulna kept their top position of the points table of the Tier-1 with 39 points, five points ahead of Dhaka.
Dhaka Metropolis v Rangpur
Mehedi Hasan, who was not out on 87 runs overnight reached the three-figure mark, while Asif Ahmed remained not out on 77 and Mahmudullah scored 52 before they reached 352-7 resuming on 179-2.
Rangpur were so desperate that their keeper Dhiman Ghosh pulled-off his keeping gloves to roll his hands for five overs and all 11 infield players bowled for Rangpur for a failed attempt to dismiss Metro.
Tanveer Haider, who was adjudged as man- of-the-match, picked up 3-73 adding to his four wickets in the first innings and 78 runs while he batted for Rangpur.
Chittagong v Rajshahi
Resuming on 97-2, Rajshahi batsmen made some useful batting practice before the match was called off. Nazmul faced 258 balls and struck 15 boundaries in his almost six-hour knock to score 101.
