Awami League Presidium Member Syeda Zohra Tajuddin died at the United Hospital in the capital on Friday morning. She was 80. Her daughter Simin Hossain Rimi, an AL parliamentarian, said that her mother died at around 10:20 am. Zohra was the wife of the country’s first Prime Minister Tajuddin Ahmad, who was assassinated inside the Dhaka Central Jail on November 3 in 1975. She was also the mother of former State Minister for Home Tanjim Ahmad Sohel Taj.
Zohra Tajuddin underwent a surgery earlier this month at Medicity Medanta in New Delhi. Later, she returned to Dhaka and was admitted to the United Hospital.
She left behind three daughters and a son. President Abdul Hamid expressed deep shock at the death of veteran politician. In a message, the president paid rich tributes to Zohra Tajuddin, saying that after the assassination of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and four national leaders in 1975, she played a crucial role in reorganizing the Awami League.
Prime Minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina also expressed shock at her death. She prayed for the peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the members of the bereaved family.
In a condolence message, the Prime Minister paid rich tributes to Zohra Tajuddin, saying that she played a crucial role in reorganizing
the Awami League. Sheikh Hasina also recalled the invaluable contribution of Zohra Tajuddin to country’s different movements, saying that the country has lost a dedicated and patriotic politician in her death.
“Her death is an irreparable loss for the nation as well as Bangladesh Awami League,” she said.
BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakrul Islam Alamgir also expressed grief at the
death of the AL leader. Recalling her great contributions in national politics, Fakru’ said,‘‘She established herself as a national leader overcoming many crises.” He prayed for the peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the members of the bereaved family.
