At least 11 people were killed and 40 others injured when two buses collided on Dhaka-Chittagong highway near Kather Pool of Chandina upazila in Comilla yesterday.
Witnesses said six people, including a woman, died on the spot and five others soon after being taken to hospital.
The victims were identified as Siddiqur Rahman, 35, a motorcyclist, of Shrimantapur village under Chandina upazila; bus driver Lokman Hossain Bhuiyan, 45, of Nolua village under Kochua upazila, Chandpur; bus helper Ramjan Ali, 23, and passenger Samrat, 38, of Shaharasti, Chandpur; Rafique, 25, of Chandpur sadar and Palash, 30, a sales representative of a pharmaceutical company, of Debipur village under Sudharam upazila, Noakhali.
The identity of five others could not be known immediately.
All the injured were rushed to Comilla Medical College Hospital and Chandina Health Complex where doctors said the condition of 10 was critical.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chandina Police Station Md Nurul Afsar Bhuiyan said Dhaka-bound bus Bilas Paribahan from Chandpur collided with Laxmipur-bound Al Baraka Paribahan at about 3:45pm. Both the vehicles were twisted and fell on the roadside.
The accident took place when the drivers tried to save two motorcyclists, who were abruptly entering the highway from North Barakamta area, the OC added.
Locals and police rescued the bodies and injured persons.
