Mutiny at Naogaon
25 BDR men jailed
Twenty-five jawans of 43 Rifles Battalion were yesterday sentenced to various jail terms–up to seven years–for their involvement in the BDR mutiny in Naogaon in 2009.
The special court-12, headed by Rajshahi Sector Commander Col Ehia Azam Khan, also fined Tk 100 to each of the convicts. The two other members of the special court are Lt Col Gazi Mohammad Khalid Hossain and Lt Commander (BN) Muhammad Touhidul Islam.
Of those convicted, sepoy Jabed Younus, Iqbal Hossain and Shahidul Islam were awarded seven years’ imprisonment while sepoy drivers Noor Mohammad and Mamun Hossain and sepoy Mehedi Hasan Roni six years’ and sepoy DM Ariful Islam, nayek Hedayet Ali to five years’ jail term.
Nayek Sheikh Farid Ahmed, lance nayek Akram Ahmed Biswas and sepoy Alim Al Fuad Shikdar will serve in jail for four years.
The other convicts are: subedar major Khalid Hossain, Nayek subedar Sheikh Atiar Rahman, sepoys Foyej Ahmed, Rezaul Karim, Biplob Hossain, Jamal Hossain, Moshiur Rahman, Masum Billah, Motiar Rahman, Shahinur Alam, Kohinur Islam, Romiuzzaman and Munshi Nazmul Haque, and sepoy driver Mostak Ali.
Aminul Islam, the then officer-in-charge of Naogaon Model Police Station, filed the mutiny case with the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court on May 17, 2009 accusing the 25 BDR jawans of looting arms from the battalion armoury and revolting against their officers followed by taking over the battalion headquarters.
Deputy Attorney General Shashanko Shekhar Sarkar was also present at the court yesterday on behalf of the attorney general.
