Sheikh Russell Krira Chakra came from a goal down to secure a 1-1 draw against Arambagh Krira Sangha in their Bangladesh League match on Saturday, but their recovery was largely overshadowed by a post-match clash.
Arambagh took the lead two minutes before half-time through their Guinean recruit Bangoura Ismael, who jumped highest to head home a Khan Sharif cross.
Sheikh Russell didn’t have to wait long for the equaliser as their Moroccan hitman Chah Rout Youssef scored his third goal of the season to cancel out the lead six minutes after the resumption.
Youssef netted a rebounder after Mohammed Yusuf’s shot came back off the woodwork after first attempt was parried by Arambagh goalkeeper Masud Rana.
Yussef got involved in a clash with Arambagh’s Mostafa Kaba after the match, which triggered a free for all at the end. The quarrel left Sheikh Russell coach Mahmudul Haque Liton injured. ‘I rushed to rescue my player when I saw he was fighting with Mostafa Kaba, who along with his skipper Deen Mohammad hit me on my face then, ’ Liton said.
Deen Mohammad defended his position saying, ‘My intention was not to hit him (Liton). My hand might have touched his face when I was trying to stop the clash between Kaba and Yussef.’
Both the teams’ players were threatening each other after the incident when police came to the scene and the situation calmed down slowly.
The second draw in six matches did not change Sheikh Russell’s position in the points table. They remained in the third place with 11 points. On the other hand, Arambagh, who already earned fame as the giant-killers after defeating Sheikh Jamal in their previous fixture, have six points in their tally from as many outings.
