Losing eyesight in the battering from husband, Dhaka University Assistant Professor Rumana Manzur now wants her only daughter Anushey to stay with her for the rest of life.
Rumana filed a case with a family court on June 30 to get her daughter’s custody, said her lawyer and family.
On Tuesday, she left for Canada for treatment of her eyes leaving Anushey at her mother’s Dhanmondi residence. The eight-year-old girl, however, wanted to travel with mom.
Also, Rumana has signed necessary papers to divorce Hasan Sayeed Sumon who pushed fingers into her eyes on June 5.
“Alongside other grounds for divorce, Rumana mentioned physical and mental torture on her,” her lawyer Elina Khan told The Daily Star yesterday.
On June 30, copies of divorce notice have been sent to Dhaka City Corporation, Sumon’s family and the jail in where he is detained, Elina said.
Meanwhile, in Vancouver General Hospital of Canada, a medical team led by David Maberley has started her treatment.
“Rumana was admitted to Vancouver hospital the day she reached Canada,” said her cousin Rashed Maqsood. “Surgeons cleaned clotted blood in her left eye the same day.”
The right eye was washed on Thursday, Maqsood quoted Rumana’s father Manzur Hossain, who accompanied her daughter to Canada, as saying.
Rumana, a teacher of DU international relations department, was rushed to Vancouver as the eye-specialists there opted for a surgery on her, said family sources.
Also a postgraduate student of University of British Columbia in Canada, she has been granted a six-month residency in the North American country for the treatment.
Well-wishers, donors and fellow UBC students have raised $41,000 so far to help support Rumana and her family for the next six months, reports The Vancouver Sun of Wednesday.
On June 14, Rumana was taken to India where experts expressed little hope for her damaged eyes.
In another development, the Detective Branch in its investigation has found the allegations against Sumon, arrested on June 15, to be true, a DB source said.
The probe is almost done and the charge sheet might be submitted within this week, the source added.
