Bodies of three teenagers were recovered from the Madhabkunda waterfall area in Barlekha upazila of Moulvibazar yesterday afternoon.
They were identified as Ashiqur Rahman, 18, who sat for the HSC exams from Dhaka Commerce College this year; Shahriar, 16, a class X student of Mirpur Bangla School and College; and Monwar Hossain Munna, 16, a class IX student of Madrash-e-Baitul Mamur, Mirpur.
All the deceased were residents of city’s Mirpur area.
Operation Officer Masudur Rahman of Baralekha Police Station said a team of eight teenagers including the three victims reached the waterfall around 1:00pm and the three waded to the point where water falls directly.
The three went missing immediately, he said adding that at this, others present there started screaming.
On information, divers from Baralekha fire station reached and tried for two hours. Then divers from Sylhet joined in the rescue work and recovered the bodies around 5:50pm.
Quoting friends of the deceased, Masudur Rahman said they reached Sylhet on Thursday morning, checked in a residential hotel there and they went to the waterfall yesterday morning.
Munna’ mother Maksuda Begum told The Daily Star that her husband received a call over phone at 2:00pm from Baralekha Police Station informing that Munna and two of his friends were drowned in the waterfall.
She added that her husband immediately left for Madhabkunda hills in Barlekha upazila.
Munna in the morning had informed her mother that they would start for Dhaka after having lunch in Madhabkunda, the emotion-chocked mother told The Daily Star reporter over phone.
