Top favourite Sheikh Russell Krira Chakra registered the biggest win of the season when they mauled Arambagh Krira Sangha 6-0 in the Bangladesh Premier League on Monday to take a solo lead in the points table. Russell’s substitute striker Mithun Chowdhury scored a brace while his team-mates Zahid Hasan Ameli, Sony Norde, Rajon Miah and Zahid Hossain scored one goal apiece against a 10-man Arambagh in the match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
Having been at the bottom of the league with only three points from five matches, the relegation-threatened Arambagh started with six defenders in a bid to take at least one point from this match but a star-studded Russell did not take a long time to break the compact defence.
Ameli scored the first goal from a spot-kick in the 30th minute after Zahid was brought down by Arambagh defender Nche Francis in the box.
Haitian winger Sony doubled the lead just after the restart, running down the left flank to slam a right-flank cross from Zahid.
Arambagh’s woes compounded in the 52nd minute after their central defender Abu Oludotun was sent off for his second bookable offence.
Striker Mithun, who had to spend most of the season on the side bench to make a place for his national team-mate Ameli, replaced Sony in the 60th minute and scored his first goal of the season just ten minutes after coming on to the pitch.
Mithun saw his goal-bound shot on a Mamun Miah cut-back deflect off the feet of Arambagh defender Kauser Hamid and into the net.
Russell’s other substitute forward Rajon Miah extended the lead in the 74th minute, receiving a defence-splitting pass from his Moroccan team-mate Tarik el Janaby inside the penalty area and dodging past an advancing Arambagh goalkeeper Mitul Hasan to finish from close range.
Tarik helped Mithun in scoring his second goal in the 82nd minute when he entered the Arambagh danger zone flummoxing two defenders with a delicate footwork and released the ball for Mithun only to tap in.
Zahid put the final nail in the Arambagh coffin, beating Arambagh defence with a nice one-two with Rajon and curling the ball at the near post from the right edge of the box.
After this fifth win in their sixth match Russell now have 15 points that lifted them to the top of the points table.
