Police detained Hefajat-e-Islam secretary general Junaid Babunagari from Dhakeshwari Temple area in Lalbagh on Monday night. Contacted, DC (Lalbagh zone) Harun-Or-Rashid said that Babunagari was detained at about 8 pm for interrogation. But witnesses said Babunagari was brought to the police station shortly after 8.30pm on the day. His arrest came hours after police today sent back Hefazat-e-Islam’s top leader Allama Ahmed Shafi to his hometown in Chittagong picking him up from a madrasah at Lalbagh area in the city.
After hours of talks between police and Hefazat leader at the madrasah, Shafi was immediately escorted to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport from where he was flown to Chittagong being accompanied by his son Anas Madani and two other aides.
The developments came as violence over the radical group’s Dhaka siege left at least 14 people dead and scores injured while the parts of capital were virtually set on fire in the past two days.
