Opposition BNP on Saturday defended the withdrawal of a parliament adjournment motion submitted by an opposition MP seeking discussions on restoration of the caretaker government (CG) system, saying the government could use it to burry the issue. “There’s no possibility of accepting the motion even if the opposition having 30/31 lawmakers puts it forward as the Awami League has the absolute majority in parliament,” said BNP standing committee
member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah.
Addressing a discussion at the National Press Club, the BNP leader also said, “The ruling party might cancel the motion through saying no, if it’s put on voice vote. They (govt) wanted to bury the non-party caretaker issue through that adjournment motion. BNP didn’t step into the trap.”
Rafiqul Islam Miah, also a former chief whip, said “We think this withdrawal was a right decision. The kind of statement the Prime Minister is now making on withdrawal of the adjournment motion is nothing but a political fraud.”
Expressing their firm stance over the restoration of the caretaker government system, the BNP leader said the next general election must be held under a non-party neutral caretaker government, no matter what the government talks about. “Otherwise, no election will be allowed to be held.”
About the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2013-14, the former minister said the government has no capability of implementing the budget it has placed in parliament.
Swechchasebok Dal organised the discussion marking the 32nd death anniversary of former president and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman.
Former pro vice-chancellor of Dhaka University Prof AFM Yusuf Haider and Dhaka city unit BNP member secretary Abdus Salam, among others, addressed the discussion presided over by Swechchasebok Dal senior vice-president Munir Hossain.
